A faixa é o quarto lançamento da cantora deste ano. Ela começou fazendo uma parceria com o Kygo no começo do ano, “I Ain’t Me”, que foi um grande sucesso mundial. Depois, lançou um novo single, “Bad Liar”, mas não divulgou a nova música. Após um tempo, liberou uma parceria com Gucci Mane, “Fetish”, mas por problemas de saúde, também não divulgou.
“Wolves” vem após um momento delicado na vida da americana. Há pouco tempo, Selena abriu sua vida nas redes sociais e contou sobre a grave doença que tem, “Lúpus”, e que neste ano, precisou fazer um transplante de rim, o que pode ter prejudicado os planos de um novo álbum.
Em entrevista para o Beats 1, a cantora disse: “Honestamente, eu não queria lançar um álbum a princípio, porque eu senti que não queria apressar as coisas. Muitas pessoas acabam se encontrando com pouco tempo. Você tem que promover bastante o álbum, você tem que fazer isso, fazer aquilo, ‘precisamos do álbum agora’, ‘precisamos do álbum após o primeiro single’… Tudo se tornou tão confuso.”
“E eu fiquei, tipo, ‘Agora eu vou lançar as músicas que eu quero lançar, no meu próprio tempo’. Eu também estava passando por coisas pessoalmente e eu queria cuidar de mim mesma. Agora que estou na situação que estou, pude trabalhar nesse filme em Nova York e passar um tempo lá, eu estou pronta. Está tudo ótimo. Eu quero retornar e focar novamente em minha música”, completou Selena.
